After the former prime minister voices his support for the deal, federal ministers ramp up the pressure on opposition to support controversial pact

Tony Abbott has stepped up the federal government’s campaign against Labor over opposition to the free trade deal with China after the former prime minister Bob Hawke voiced his support for the pact.

Prime minister Tony Abbott and the education minister, Christopher Pyne, said the deal, which is opposed by unions, would secure the nation’s future for decades.
