A new report titled, “Towards Smart Farming: Agriculture Embracing the IoT Vision”, researched and written by Beecham Research has suggested that Internet of Things (IoT) technology will have a crucial role to play in helping to meet the food demands of a growing global population.

The report focuses on the opportunities provided by precision farming and the importance of developing ‘smart’ connectivity to enable it. Beecham Research looked at a range of potential IoT functions in farming, including farm vehicle fleet management, livestock monitoring, forestry and storage monitoring. Meanwhile, the report lists six critical components for ‘smart farming’; sensors, data analytics, hardware and software, telematics and position tech, cellular communication systems and software applications.

Key opportunities identified include the ability for farmers to track important information like crop yields, rainfall quantities and soil nutrition to previously unattainable levels of accuracy.

Beecham’s research focuses on the opportunities for the Internet of Things to make farming more efficient. However, there’s another line of thinking that suggests that farming needs a mindset shift that goes beyond improving the current model’s efficiency. Brazilian farmer Leontino Balbo Jr will discuss and describe his revitalising agriculture approach as a Headline Act at this year’s Disruptive Innovation Festival. The future of farming and the potential role for IoT, will be explored in detail as key themes for the three-week long, online event, which starts on November 2.
