Consumer goods giant Unilever has announced a new system called CreaSolv Process, which could enable the company to recover and repurpose single-use small plastic sachets in other Unilever products.

Responsible for some of Europe’s most recognisable supermarket brands, including Dove, Ben & Jerry’s and Marmite, Unilever’s announcement could cause a significant ripple in industry. The company sells billions of products in single-use sachets, which are notoriously difficult to recapture and recycle in a way that works from a business and economic perspective.

The announcement is part of Unilever’s pledge to ensure that all of its plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, and it starts with the opening of a pilot plant in Indonesia to test the long-term commercial viability of the technology.

“Billions of sachets are used once and just thrown away, all over the world, ending up in landfill or in our waterways and oceans. We intend to make this tech open source and would hope to scale the technology with industry partners, so others – including our competitors – can use it,” David Blanchard, chief research and development officer at Unilever, told the Independent.
