The circular economy is still a relatively new concept in the US market, but there are definite signs of business, large and small, buying into the idea and attempting to understand what it could mean for their models. A circular economy pilot, including by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation in partnership with the Resource Recycling Systems (RSS), Walmart Foundation, Target, Walgreens and Republic Services, which will launch in January, demonstrates that continued progress.

Taking place in a still to-be-determined US city, the project will be focused on increasing the recycling, recovery and reuse of high-value materials. Still in the scoping phase, the initiative has identified a number of potential regions and aims to demonstrate the potential of systemic impact at scale in the US economy.

Increasing recycling and high-value material recovery should only ever be part of the circular economy picture, of course, and the full scope of this project’s initiatives have yet to be unannounced. However, on the back of studies suggesting opportunities for US businesses, and the development of a localised US network for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100 (CE100) programme, it is a positive sign that some of the country’s largest companies are now looking at the potential to take action.
