The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) has commissioned Eunomia to explore the potential of integrating circular economy principles into Europe’s furniture sector.

The scope of the research is to investigate key business and policy interventions that could accelerate the implementation of circular economy in the furniture sector. Around 80-90% of furniture waste, which accounts for more than 4% of solid waste in the EU’s municipal waste, is either incinerated or sent to landfill.

A number of areas hold potential promise for implementing more regenerative models in the furniture sector, including the design principles like disassembly, incentivising return and new business models including leasing and take-back models. The biggest opportunities and potential constraints will be revealed through the project, which will focus on the resource benefits, net cost saving opportunities and CO2 emission reduction.

The project is evidence of the continued increase in uptake of the circular economy concept and the potential to apply it across a range of sectors and in a number of contexts is evident. Particularly encouraging is that an expectation has clearly been embedded and established, through numerous reports on the subject, that clear economic and business benefits will be uncovered.
