In an article appearing on World Economic Forum Agenda, Ellen MacArthur outlines the link between the growing momentum behind the circular economy framework, and the UN’s recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 international social, environmental and economic objectives forged in the aftermath of the Millennium Development Goals, which ran from 2000 to 2015.
MacArthur writes that the SDGs look “beyond the industrial revolution-inherited, linear, extractive model of “take, make, dispose”, to shape positive solutions.” Highlighting the findings from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s latest report, which found significant economic, environmental and social benefits in transitioning to circular economy models in Europe, she suggests that today there is an encouraging convergence between “bold objectives and a credible framework.”
The full extent to which the objectives of those driving the SDGs and the transition to a circular economy might intersect and overlap remains mostly unknown, but Ellen’s article represents a potential starting point for that discussion, read the full piece here.
